Sore Throat Causes
The only thing more annoying than a sore throat itself is not knowing the cause. While not always the case, most sore throats are caused by a minor illness that can be quickly cleared up with the proper treatment.
Since you are sure to be faced with this ailment at some point in the future, it is important to learn more about sore throat causes.
Viral Infections
Most sore throats are caused by a viral infect, including but not limited to:
- The common cold
- Voice box infection, also known as laryngitis
- Mononucleosis, a viral infection that can last several months and cause many symptoms, including a sore throat
- Mumps
Bacterial Infections
Another common cause of a sore throat is a bacterial infection:
- Strep throat, which is the most common bacterial infection leading to a sore throat
- Infection of the tonsils
- Inflammation of the epiglottis, also known as epiglottitis
- Inflammation of the uvula, also known as uvulitis
External Irritant
A sore throat does not necessarily have to be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. An external irritant could also be the cause:
- Allergens during particular times of the year, especially spring and fall
- Low humidity
- Smoke
- Air pollution
If your sore throat persists for longer than a week, there is a good chance an external irritant, such as one from the list above, is causing your problem.
Most of these irritants can be eliminated or treated in some way. For example, if you are around somebody who is always smoking, remove yourself from this situation and you will be surprised at how quickly your sore throat goes away.
Although these sore throat causes are common, since they all lead to the same problem it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. If you are unsure of what is causing your sore throat or how to treat the problem, contact your doctor for advice and treatment options.
